A Piotr Zielinski goal on the hour mark gave Serie A leaders Napoli a narrow 1-0 win in the local derby against Salernitana at the Stadio Arechi on Sunday.
Napoli dominated the ball from the off, but struggled to break down Salernitana’s defence in the first 45 minutes, when they had no attempt on target.
The visitors finally managed to take the lead on the hour mark through Zielinski, just after Andrea Petagna’s header crashed against the crossbar.
Nerves seemed to be jangling in the remaining minutes as Juventus loanee Grigoris Kastanos was shown a straight red for a shocking challenge on Zambo Anguissa with 10 minutes to go.
Kalidou Koulibaly was also sent off with a direct red card for a tackle on Simy a few minutes later, before Franck Ribery’s freekick was cleared off the line by Giovanni di Lorenzo.
Salernitana pushed for an equaliser in the remaining minutes, but they failed to net and Napoli grabbed a hard-fought victory to remain top of the Serie A table with 31 points, while the hosts sit second bottom with seven points.
