Flying Officers Cup Day 2: Big win for Confluence Queens as FC Robo Queens, Osun Babes earn slim victories

Day 2 of the 2021 Flying Officers Cup saw three games, 8 goals amidst flair and exciting football artistry from all teams. FC Robo Queens handed Bayelsa Queens a 1-0 defeat, Prince Kazeem Eletu FC lost to Osun Babes and Confluence Queens handed SGH Sports Academy a bitter football lesson by handing them a hard to swallow defeat at the Area 10 Sports Complex, Abuja.

FC Robo Queens eventually got one past the defending champions of the Flying Officers Cup, AITEO cup and Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament, in the tournament’s second match, but day two’s first match at the Area 10 Sports Complex, Abuja, courtesy Yahaya Marylene’s first half terrific goal.

FC Robo Queens went into the game as underdog to the team that last beat them at the final of the AITEO cup and semi finals of the just concluded Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament, both defeats at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.

Both sides started hostilities with all attacking minds as they threw at each other dangerously initiated attacks met by disciplined defense on the either side

FC Robo Queens on the 18th minute took the lead, courtesy Yahaya Marylene who scored a fantastic goal after beating an helpless Bayelsa Queens’ goalkeeper, Monle Omini, from Esther Onyenezide’s timely great cross.

Opeyemi Ajakaye came close to adding the advantage for Robo Queens after receiving a pass from Ogbuchi Chidinma on the 32nd minute, but Alake Kasali denied her effort.

The second half resumed with Bayelsa Queens asking questions on various occasions from a resilient Robo defense led by Twinklestar; Kafayat Bashiru started the push on the 47th minute with a fantastic chance created for Favour Emmanuel, but the latter’s pass went begging.

Robo’s goalie, Bukola Adegbite failed to handle Kafayat’s free-kick on the 57th minute, leading to corner kick for the trailing team. Blessing Ilivieda again came close to scoring on the 77th minute, but wide off post, her shot went.

Bayelsa Queens on the ascending went close to scoring again with 7 minutes to end the game; Joy Jerry found herself in a promising angle, released a shot at goal, but Adegbite once again stood tall to have it saved and left Bayelsa Queens frustrated.

Osun Babes had to come from behind in the second game of the day to secure a 2-1 win over Prince Kazeem Eletu Queens FC.

Mega Cynthia had given Prince Kazeem Eletu Queens the lead in the 42nd minute before Ebere Oleka equalised for the Omoluabi Queens in the 52nd minute when she found a free space upfront and rounded off Adesoji Esther in goal for Prince Kazeem Eletu Queens.

Eight minutes from full time, Osun Babes took the lead for the first time in the game as Suliat Ajibade took advantage of a loose ball from Prince Kazeem Eletu Queens’ defence and made it count.

Confluence Queens vs SGH Sports Academy
The final game of the day between Confluence Queens and SGH Sports Academy ended 4-0 in favour of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership side.

Mercy Omokwe scored the fastest goal of this year’s tournament immediately after kick off to give Confluence Queens the lead.

Three more goals from Arit Usang, Godson Orjiugo and Suliat Hassan handed Confluence Queens the biggest victory thus far at the 2021 Flying Officers Cup.

Actions will continue tomorrow, as Sunshine Queens will play against WACO Ladies in the first game of the day by 8am, two time finalists, Nasarawa Amazons will tackle Edo Queens by 10:30am in what seem like a repeat of the 2019 Flying Officers Cup final. Lakeside Queens will be up against Dannaz Ladies by 1pm, and by 3pm, Naija Ratels will hope to do better when they play against Royal Queens in their second game of the competition.
